Monks have been brewing beer as long as anyone can remember. Monks were also responsible for locking the church. Because of the correlation of these two, the term “churchkey” was adopted as a means to opening a beer. Perhaps it is a little tongue in cheek as beer generally has nothing to do with pious or religious activities. Regardless, we think those crafty monks were onto something when they started brewing beer in church. We would probably go to church more often if they had beer.
